While the Holidays are a magical time of year, they also tend to produce a lot of waste. From
“Black Friday,” “Cyber Monday,” Christmas gifts, decorations, or treating yourself before the
Winter Solstice, there is a lot of purchasing, packaging, and shipping. Teton Valley Community
Recycling (TVCR) is here to help us divert as much waste as possible (and maybe some of our
own guilt.) TVCR’s seasonal programs include a gift wrap station (with fabric wrap!) and light
repair stations (with Christmas light recycling collection!).
The gift wrap station is at the Geo Center in downtown Driggs. It has fabric and directions for
how to gift wrap using fabric. Fabric is reusable, whereas single use disposable wrap is
generally not (depending on how excited your loved one is to open their gift). Disposable gift
wrap is not recyclable and must be put in the trash to be trucked out of town to a landfill. In
addition to the fabric wrap, the gift wrap station has some disposable gift wrap, ribbons, tinsel,
tags, tape, and scissors. It is a one stop shop for gift wrapping that is free to anyone in the
Christmas Light Repair and Recycling
TVCR is also providing two light repair stations- at the Geo Center and the Driggs Library
Makerspace. There are directions with the tools if you want to try to fix your Christmas lights
before tossing them. IF they are indeed broken, you can recycle Christmas lights! We are
collecting Christmas lights for recycling at the Geo Center, the Driggs library Makerspace, MD
Nursery, and Ace.
Christmas Tree Composting
Even if you leave the Christmas lights up until January, you will eventually need to dispose of
your Christmas tree. MD Nursery offers free Christmas tree chipping and composting.
TVCR waste reduction programs that are year round include the battery recycling (General
Laundry, Teton Valley Lumber, MD Nursery, Broulims, Ace, Geo Center), Pierre’s Pedal Project,
Terracycle, and plastic shed recycling (behind MD Nursery). The plastic shed recycling behind
MD Nursery has bubble wrap in a separate bin, which is a perfect resource for when you are
shipping your own fragile gifts. Don’t buy new bubble wrap! Forage it from the plastic recycling
Donations are always appreciated with proceeds going to support TVCR’s community programs
and waste reduction advocacy in Teton County.
Don’t miss your chance to participate in TVCR’s Holiday waste diversion plans. A true win-win!
