Share Your New Year’s RRResolutions and Win!
It’s that time of year again – the start of a new year when we reflect on the joys and successes of 2018 and look forward to things we can improve in 2019. Teton Valley Community Recycling hopes that members of our local community are excited to implement some simple lifestyle changes to reduce waste in your household and try simple Reduce, Reuse, Rethink strategies during this upcoming year.
What are some changes that you could make in 2019?
It’s now widely recognized that our use of disposable plastics is a global problem – from ocean pollution to landfills overflowing with plastics that will be there for thousands of years. Simple changes in how you shop and eat can radically reduce your plastic consumption.
Food waste makes up 40% of our landfill bound waste, so there is plenty of room for us to change our meal planning and shopping habits, donate scraps to local pigs or chickens, or start your own backyard compost. It’s easy – and we’re happy to help you choose a site and build one of your own.
Even recycling, which we once thought was such an easy solution, is proving to be fraught with problems. Teton Valley has experienced a steady increase of contaminating materials in the recycling while the global recycling markets require cleaner and cleaner products. Are you rinsing your recycling and ensuring no plastic food containers or other contaminants end up in your recycling bins? Are you taking advantage of the new TerraCycle collections of “hard to recycle waste” available at the GeoTourism Center (including contact lenses, dental waste, cereal bags, etc.)? Can you recycle more or recycle “better”?
TVCR is so excited about all of the great things individuals, businesses, and organizations in our community are doing to be leaders in the local “green” movement.
