UNDERSTANDING FEES
August 4, The Board of County Commissioners, after a public hearing, established the following schedule of fees for waste being delivered to the County Transfer Station: TRANSFER STATION FEES
SUMMARY OF FEE CHANGE
Household $3.00 minimum has increased to $5.00
$60/ton fee for SORTED WASTE decreased to $30/ton
$60/ton fee for UNSORTED HOUSEHOLD WASTE increased to $63/ton
$60/ton fee for UNSORTED NON-HOUSEHOLD WASTE increased to $100/ton. See RECYCLE to better understand Household and Non-Household Waste.
Comparing the old system to the new.
The old fee system was $20/sq.yd. TVCR did a test of square yardage to tonnage comparison and we discovered that the old fee system was probably more expensive.
The old landfill operation appeared to be "free" - but the real cost will not be fully understood for another 30 years, as the cost to monitor and possibly clean up any leaking that might occur are tallied up. For the last 80+ years, Teton County operated a landfill wherein residents were able to drive in and dump their trash in an unlined open pit. In the early 90's, the Department of Environmental Quality informed the County that the landfill was nearing its 20 tons a day limit and would need to be closed, capped, and monitored for 30 years.
That day arrived in October 2007, the capping of the old landfill is complete and monitoring is now underway.
The county now has to transfer our garbage to a landfill 80 miles away. This landfill is not permitted to take construction waste. Teton County is now able to divert that construction waste and recover tons of sorted waste each day, saving thousands in transfer costs and lessening our County's impact on the environment.
The more you participate in separating your construction, yard, and household garbage, the more priority will be given to systems that support those efforts.
